Jimpa': Sundance Review | Reviews | Screen

Jimpa, directed by Sophie Hyde, is a semiautobiographical family drama that explores the legacy of gay rights activism across three generations. The story centers on Jim, a gay man who came out in the 1970s and challenged convention by remaining amicably married to his wife, and his nonbinary grandchild, Frances. The film  celebrates the progress that has grown from the Sexual Revolution while portraying a family that values kindness, open communication, and acceptance, even when its members disagree.

At the heart of the film is Jimpa’s unapologetic embrace of his identity and his influence on Frances. Their relationship allows Frances to turn to their grandfather for guidance about relationships and sexuality, reflecting a level of trust and openness within the family. Jimpa’s willingness to challenge social expectations—including his comfort with his aging body—embodies the film’s larger message: gay pride means rejecting shame and embracing who you are.
