Shades of “Brokeback Mountain” hover over this thoughtful film about life in a tough and small-minded Welsh fishing village. \nIf circumstances had been different\, Jack might have left his small\, despondent hometown on the Welsh coast. He might have followed a career outside the family business instead of slogging with a rake and a bucket on the mussel beds. He might even have been able to live as an out gay man without having to endure sneers and barely veiled hostility. But the wide open skies in his corner of the world are at odds with the narrow horizons Jack faced as a young man. \nHaving been married to Maggie for more than half his life\, Jack starts to question his journey here. Two factors shift his perspective: one is a cancer diagnosis (he is now in remission)\, the other the arrival of itinerant fishing boat skipper Daniel. “On The Sea” explores the collision of gay sexual awakening and repressed self-loathing\, which unfolds in working-class rural Britain\, where masculinity comes with a rigid set of rules. The film becomes a quiet\, sensual exploration of closeted desire\, masculinity\, aging\, family\, and the frightening possibility of changing your life. \nIt is deliberately slow-burning rather than a conventional romance\, with an often bleak but beautiful coastal setting and some notably frank sex scenes. The raw desire between Jack and Daniel is sensitively awakened. \n

This movie is a rich and often thrilling trip into writer/director Lucio Castro’s personal understanding of how queer romance\, sexual pleasure\, and mind-expanding art can only flourish when we have enough room and receptivity to feel that everything inside us is either naturally or instinctively related. \nAdnan’s story is remarkable not only because he finds sex and art to be mutually expansive means of connecting with others. Rather\, what really stands out in “Drunken Noodles” is Castro’s knack for cultivating a shared gracefulness and air of possibility to unite scenes of pastoral beauty—leafy trees\, unpaved roads\, and a private brook\, too—with enchanting urban settings where strangers can find and seduce each other anywhere\, including city streets\, art galleries\, playgrounds\, and apartments. \n“Drunken Noodles” both is and isn’t a romantic drama since it’s more about how Adnan’s desires are fulfilled without necessarily serving a greater purpose or resolution. He finds a subtly profound pleasure in longing\, as well as in fleeting moments of connection with people and places that only ostensibly seem defined by oppositional relationships. Here\, Castro looks past those superficial differences and celebrates the everyday pleasures of making connections that can be felt without necessarily being fully understood. \n  \n
